Europe Day

The Day of Europe (or Europe Day) in the EU countries since 1985 on May 9 celebrated to reflect on the fact that on that date in 1950 the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in an ambitious statement indicating that a supranational European organization had be established which would later become the European Union.

The top of Milan decided in 1985 to 9 May to call for Europe Day.

The Day of Europe enjoys little known, but European officials have a free day.

Who in his diary or a calendar for May 9 'Europe Day', the procedure will probably wonder what on May 9 that it happened.

There are few citizens know that on May 9, 1950 was the impetus for the unification of Europe, at a time when, as is known, all over Europe feared a third world war.

On that day the press was at 18.00 at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Quai d'Orsay convened for a "communication of the highest importance." The first lines of the Declaration of 9 May, which was drafted by Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, the press was read and explained, made it immediately clear how their ambitious plan.

"World peace can only be protected by creative efforts proportionate to the dangers that threaten it."

"Through the joint production of the war industries under the authority to place a new High Authority, whose decisions are binding on France, Germany and other countries that join, submit its proposal the first concrete foundations for a European federation indispensable to maintaining the peace. "

It was therefore proposed a supranational European organization to be established for the management of raw materials that are currently the basis of all military power were: coal and steel. But the two countries that their national ownership of the "sinews of war" had to retire, had met only a few years previous to the death fought in a terrible conflict not only great material, but also enormous psychological damage - hatred, resentment and prejudice - failed.

To realize how incredibly generous gesture this was, one would today have to think of a similar initiative between Israelis and Palestinians, Serbs and Bosnians or Tutsies and Hutus: but the shell was much larger and the wounds were much deeper.

It all began so on 9 May 1950 (only five years after the end of World War II). Therefore, the Heads of State and Government summit in Milan in 1985 to 9 May to call for "Europe Day".

These values ??are achieved through economic and social development and a balanced environment and regional policy, the only way to give all citizens a certain standard of living.

As a group, people who realize that they and their similar or complementary cultures form a unity, is actually Europe for centuries, but without rules and institutions realize this was never sufficient to prevent catastrophes. There are still some countries that are not connected to the European Union, the scene of terrible tragedies.

Like any human undertaking of such magnitude, the European integration course not in a day or even in several decades to complete. There are still many shortcomings and imperfections. The job that shortly after the Second World War began, is therefore never seen before!

As in previous centuries and millennia sometimes seemed like an attempt to create unity, was in reality the result of the domination of one people by another. Such structures could never last long, because the conquered had only one goal: to regain their independence.

Today we seek something else: a Europe in which the freedom and identity of all member nations to be respected and which is jointly controlled based on the principle: what can be better together, we must do together.

Only the unification of the peoples of Europe can provide assurance that the control over its future and its influence in the world reserves.
