How to protect yourself from Solar radiation and Choosing a sunscreen
Warm in the sun and tanning is good for the mind, but very dangerous for health. It is essential to protect you from UVA, UVB and IR with a sunscreen. But with so much variety, how do you do? What solar factor to choose? Find the product you need.
The Sun
Solar radiation consists of UV (ultraviolet), not detectable by the eye: the UVB with glass stand filter, pass through the UV and infrared (IR) diffuse heat.
Solar radiation
The quality of solar radiation varies with latitude, season, cloud cover, altitude, pollution and time of day. Heat stroke is a combination of direct radiation, solar radiation released into the atmosphere, and the radiation reflected by the ground (snow reflects 80%, 20% sand and water 30%).
Before choosing sunscreen, need to ask a question: what are the conditions of heat stress? Different depending on location and latitude or altitude are extreme in the tropics (where UV radiation is vertical), and therefore require maximum protection.
How to protect yourself?
We must consider several factors.
Which is your skin type, known as skin type? We decline of I to IV, depending on the color of hair, skin and its ability to tan.
Skin types 1 and 2: milky skin, red hair, which burn without tanning, and northern fur, which is very lightly browned.
Skin type 3: brown with light skin who tan gradually, although it burns.
phototype 4: kill more resistant skin who tan without burning.
The lighter the skin, the highest rate of protection should be used.
Which product to choose?
Opt for a cream and help, in the short term, avoid sunburn protects the skin from UVB, and that long-term preservation of skin aging by protecting skin from UVA. Otherwise, limit the risk of skin cancer.
What protection?
The European recommendation on the labeling of sunscreen products has established 4 categories of protection and rates of protection:
Low protection, UVB 6 to 14, labeled 6 or 10.
Medium protection, UVB from 15 to 29, labeled 20 or 25.
High Protection UVB 30 to 59, labeled 30 or 50.
Very high protection, UVB than 60, labeled 50 +. (The latter is suitable for children, pregnant women, and sensitive or photosensitive).
What texture?
For the face, use a fluid cream, non comedogenic, for the body, the milk or spray (forget oils, whose texture does not permit incorporating appropriate filters).
Our advice: better a product with a low protection rate but is easy to apply to a product with a high rate, thick texture unpleasant and difficult to implement, leaving white spots.
How often do you apply sunscreen?
We must take steps to make sure you tan with caution and care.
Avoid exposing yourself in the hottest hours, between 12 and 16 hours.
Renew the application of sunscreen every two hours.
Case studies
In the mountains, for skiing at altitude, continued protection is essential with a high rate (50 or +). The sun is strong and the reflection in the snow too. Protect your eyes with sunglasses. This also applies to high mountain hikers in summer.
In the tropics, on the shore and on the white sand, wear a high protection cream from the beginning of your stay. When you start to tan, reduces the rate to 40 and then 20, but be careful not to use a less than 15, because the reverb is very strong on water, sand and even under an umbrella.
At sea, protect yourself to the fullest because, in addition to sun, windy and reverb produces water and sand. Start with an index 40 for the face and 30 for the body, and follow your holiday with lower levels once you're tanned.
In the desert, the body is covered and protected her face with a hat, but this does not prevent sun burn. Ponte cream index 40 or higher on the face, and do not forget to protect your hands and forearms with a cream index 30 or higher.
On the terrace of a caf or a park in the spring, remember to protect yourself because the rays also affect the city. An index 15 is sufficient for the face and chest. Always carry a bottle of cream in the bag, in case you need to protect yourself if you are several hours in the sun.
In the garden, protect yourself with a rate at least 20, since the sun also heats in the field, especially in summer. Do not trust the first rays of spring, which also burned through the clouds.
Although you tan, be careful. Use a soft protection for the face and body, especially if you go to sea in summer, because there is sun and wind.
